Smashbox cosmetics has only been available in Hungary for a few months, but has already introduced their Cover Shot collection, shortly after it’s incredibly successful American debut. This collection is an intriguing collaboration with the beautiful and talented Shay Micthell from the hit TV show Pretty Little Liars. The collaboration contains 7 perfectly designed eyeshadow palettes that all represent a different side of Shay, hence the collection is often described as ‘The 7 shades of Shay’. The diversity of these eyeshadow palettes allow anyone to find the perfect one for themselves, making this collection a real gem. At first, 7 different palettes can seem overwhelming, so I decided to summarise the key details you should know about this collaboration and the palettes, and hopefully I can help you in deciding which one is perfect for you.
Smashbox cosmetics can be purchased in Douglas stores, but as far as I know, only in the shops within Mammut and Arena malls. These palettes retail for 9,990 Ft (roughly $35), each including a mirror and exactly 8 shades of which 6 are smaller pans but 2 are double sized base shades. The 7 different palettes are: Metallic, Matte, Golden Hour, Softlight, Smoky, Bold and Ablaze.
1. Metallic: Fierce foil finish
This palette is entirely made up of finely milled, metallic and shimmery shadows that are by no means chunky or glittery. They all glide effortlessly both with a brush and with fingers. The colour selection is stunning, nothing too crazy and all colours are very wearable day to day. Since this palette is 100% metallic, for a complete look you will need to grab some matte shadows from your collection which could be a potential drawback of this palette. Metallic, purchased with the Matte palette would be a perfect combo, providing you with 8 metallic and 8 matte shadows that you can use to create ANY look you could dream of.
2. Matte: High-coverage + Velvet touch
In my opinion this is the most useful palette out of the 7 to have in your collection. For most makeup looks, matte shades are essential and in this palette you have 8 buttery and velvety shadows that you can use on every day of your life. It doesn’t only contain your essential nudes but also a flattering purple that can spice up any makeup look. If you need an everyday, neutral, easy to use palette; this is the one for you. Combined with any of your shimmer shadows, you will be able to achieve any look you desire.
3. Golden Hour: Cream, Lift-form-within shades
I have a feeling this will be one of the most popular palettes out of the 7, due to its stunning, warm, golden shades. Golden Hour contains two matte base colours and the rest are beautiful metallics that you can use at both day and night time. With this palette my only complaint would be the lack of a darker matte crease colour, which would make it a PERFECT palette, but it is still one of my favourites from the seven. If you’re into warm, golden tones and love a metallic look, then you should definitely grab Golden Hour!
4. Softlight: Soft-focus, wearable shimmers
To me this palette greatly resembles the Urban Decay Naked 3 palette, as both have the same, rosy pink tones. This palette is incredibly natural, feminine and as the name suggests, soft. Once again this palette lacks a dark crease colour, but for those who want a very natural and subtle look, this palette is perfect and complete as it is. All shades are very soft and creamy and are perfect to use as highlighters on the high points of your face. This is definitely the most natural option out of the 7, containing beautiful champagnes, pinks and lilacs.
5. Smoky: Effortless and modern
To all the girls out there who love going out at night or wear intense makeup frequently: this one is for you! Unlike traditional smoky eye palettes, not every shade in the palette is your typical grey and black. Among the shades we can see a beautiful green but also a stunning warm red. The two matte base shades are perfect to create a flawless transition but you can also use the brown shadow to contour your check bones or snatch your nose.
6. Bold: Transformative and electrifying
This is hands down the most fun palette out of the collection, containing 6 matte electrifying colours along with two neutral base eyeshadows. This palette definitely resembles the Urban Decay Electric palette, but is nevertheless still an amazing choice if you love experimenting with bold colours and creative looks.
7. Ablaze: Hot, desert-inspired shades
Personally, this is my other favourite one just by looking at the pictures. It has a similar colour selection to the Kylie Cosmetics burgundy palette and also the Anastasia Beverly Hills Modern Renaissance palette, with a perfect composition of warm earth tones. It contains a stunning burgundy colour as well as a matte terra cotta. To me, this is fall in a palette, after purchasing this all you need is a pumpkin spice latte! If you love rich, warm eyeshadows or want to try a more affordable alternative to the Kylie or ABH palette, then this is definitly a great choice for you.
In conclusion, I think this is one of the best and most exciting collections that have launched recently in the makeup world and Shay did an amazing job in creating 7 very unique palettes. I personally have not yet purchased any of them, but am seriously dying to try the Golden Hour of Ablaze. Have you tried any of them yet? If this post has encouraged you to purchase any of these palettes, you can use the VALENTIN17 coupon code on the Douglas web shop for 20% off until Valentine’s Day.
